The Ultimate Trunk-or-Treat Checklist: What to Bring, Buy & Prepare

The Ultimate Trunk-or-Treat Checklist: What to Bring, Buy & Prepare

Trunk-or-treat is one of the most fun ways to celebrate Halloween with kids, but showing up with a decorated car and a bag of candy is only part of the preparation. A little planning can help you create a fun display, keep everything organized, and avoid those last-minute trips back home.

Whether you're planning a simple pumpkin-themed trunk or going all out with ghosts, skeletons, a haunted house, and spooky treats, this checklist covers what to bring, what to buy, and what to prepare before the event.

Choose Your Trunk-or-Treat Theme

Before buying decorations, decide what your trunk will look like. Having a theme makes shopping easier and helps all your decorations work together.

Some popular ideas include a haunted house, spooky graveyard, friendly ghosts, skeletons, witches, pumpkins, monsters, a candy shop, pirate ship, spooky circus, or magical Halloween forest.

You don't need to cover every inch of your car. Pick one main centerpiece and add a few smaller decorations around it.

Halloween Trunk Decorations

Once you have your theme, choose a few decorations that will make the biggest impact. Artificial spider webs, hanging ghosts, skeletons, bats, Halloween signs, garlands, pumpkins, and spooky fabric can transform an ordinary trunk into a Halloween scene.

Look for lightweight decorations that are easy to install and remove. Make sure nothing blocks your lights, windows, license plate, or anything else needed for safe driving.

Halloween Lights

If your event continues into the evening, lighting can make your trunk look even more impressive. Battery-powered string lights, LED candles, small lanterns, and glowing pumpkins are easy options.

Test all your lights at home and bring extra batteries. Warm white lights can create a cozy haunted-house look, while orange, purple, or multicolor lights can make a more playful display.

Halloween Candy

Of course, no trunk-or-treat setup is complete without candy. Individually wrapped treats are convenient and easy to hand out.

Stock up on a variety of favorites such as chocolate, gummies, lollipops, hard candy, and Halloween-themed treats. If you're expecting a big crowd, it's better to have extra than to run out halfway through the event.

You can also keep a separate stash of candy in your car so your main candy bowl can be refilled quickly.

Candy Bowls and Treat Containers

A big Halloween candy bowl is one of those small purchases that makes a huge difference. A pumpkin bucket, black cauldron, skull bowl, or Halloween serving tray can hold your treats while also becoming part of your decoration.

Choose a container that is large enough to hold plenty of candy without requiring constant refills.

Halloween Treat Bags

Want to make your candy station even cuter? Add Halloween treat bags.

Small favor bags can be filled with a few candies and handed directly to children. You can choose ghost, pumpkin, witch, skeleton, or monster designs to match your trunk theme.

Treat bags are especially useful if you want to create little themed goodie bags rather than simply handing out individual pieces of candy.

Costumes and Accessories

Don't forget about the people inside the costumes!

Prepare everyone's Halloween costume ahead of time and make sure all accessories are ready. Hats, capes, wings, masks, wigs, face paint, and other small pieces are easy to forget.

Pack costume accessories in a separate bag so everything stays together. If the weather is cold, plan costumes that can work with a jacket or warm layers underneath.

Trunk Decorating Supplies

Beautiful decorations won't stay beautiful if they fall off your car. Bring basic decorating supplies so you can make adjustments at the event.

Useful items include removable adhesive hooks, clips, tape, zip ties, string, and scissors. A small plastic container or zipper pouch is perfect for keeping these supplies together.

It's also a good idea to decorate as much as possible at home and leave only the final setup for the event.

Folding Table

A small folding table can give you extra space for candy, games, drinks, decorations, or other supplies.

If your trunk is already filled with a large haunted house or other decorations, a table can become a separate candy station. Choose a lightweight folding table that is easy to carry and quick to set up.

Halloween Games

If you want your trunk to be more than just a candy stop, add a simple Halloween game.

Ring toss, bean bag toss, Halloween trivia, guessing games, coloring activities, and mini scavenger hunts are easy options. Keep the activity quick so children can participate without creating a long line.

A small basket of inexpensive Halloween prizes can make the activity even more exciting.

Weather Protection

Check the weather before heading to the event. Even if the forecast looks good, it's smart to have a few backup supplies in your car.

Waterproof storage containers and plastic bags can protect candy and decorations from unexpected rain. An umbrella or compact canopy may also be useful if the event rules allow it.

Keeping your decorations in waterproof containers also makes transportation much easier.

Comfortable Shoes and Extra Layers

Trunk-or-treat often involves standing and walking around for longer than expected. Comfortable shoes are much more practical than uncomfortable costume footwear.

If you're attending on a chilly October evening, bring jackets, sweaters, scarves, or other layers that can be worn without ruining the costume.

Hand Sanitizer and Wipes

With candy, children, decorations, and lots of people around, a small bottle of hand sanitizer is worth bringing.

Wet wipes are also useful for sticky fingers, spilled candy, makeup mishaps, or quick cleanup. Keep them somewhere easy to reach rather than buried under your decorations.

Trash Bags and Cleanup Supplies

Plan for cleanup before the event even begins. Bring a few trash bags for candy wrappers and other waste, plus paper towels or wipes for spills.

You should also have a storage bag or plastic container for your decorations. When the event ends, you can quickly pack everything away instead of throwing loose decorations into your trunk.

Phone and Portable Charger

Your phone will probably be busy taking photos and videos, so don't forget to charge it before leaving home.

A portable charger can be especially useful if you're spending several hours at the event. You'll want enough battery left for pictures of the finished trunk, the kids in their costumes, and all those cute Halloween moments.

A Small Emergency Kit

A small emergency bag can save the night if something unexpected happens.

Consider bringing bandages, tissues, safety pins, extra hair ties, stain-removing wipes, and a few basic personal-care items. You probably won't need most of them, but you'll be happy to have them if something goes wrong.

Make a Final Trunk-or-Treat Checklist

Before leaving home, take a few minutes to check everything.

Make sure you have your candy, decorations, lights, decorating supplies, costumes, games, treat containers, cleanup supplies, and anything your family may need.

Most importantly, give yourself enough time to set up. Arriving early means you can decorate your trunk without rushing and make last-minute adjustments before the children arrive.

With the right supplies and a simple plan, your Trunk-or-Treat setup can be festive, fun, and memorable without becoming overwhelming. Pick a theme, bring a few eye-catching decorations, stock up on treats, and don't forget the practical essentials that make the evening easier.
